Kathy Ruemmler, a lawyer who worked as head of legal affairs and general counsel announced her resignation from Goldman Sachs. The resignation will take effect on 30 June 2026. The decision follows the publication of emails by the US Department of Justice showing a close personal relationship between Ruemmler and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Distancing

Although Ruemmler initially defended herself and denied any wrongdoing, she eventually expressed regret that she had known Epstein. Earlier, she had affectionately described him as an "elder brother" and "uncle", while downplaying his criminal activities. In recent statements, however, she condemned Epstein as a "monster".

Prior to her resignation, Ruemmler consistently tried to distance herself from the released correspondence. David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, expressed respect for her decision and highlighted her significant contributions to the company and her mentoring role within the organisation.

Concerns around gifts

The emails revealed that Ruemmler had received numerous expensive gifts from Epstein during her time in private practice following her departure from the White House in 2014. These gifts included luxury handbags and a fur coat, raising concerns about possible conflicts of interest due to Epstein's previous conviction for sex crimes in 2008.

Goldman Sachs' code of conduct requires any exchange of gifts between employees and clients to be pre-approved. This mainly involves high-value items that may violate anti-bribery laws. The revelation of these gifts has cast a shadow over Ruemmler's tenure at Goldman Sachs, despite earlier statements of support from CEO David Solomon, who described her as an "excellent advocate".
