:: Congolese refugees are fleeing to Burundi as Rwandan-backed M23 rebels advance in Congo

"There is no access to drinking water or sanitation facilities. The situation is dire. A large influx of Congolese men, women, and children has overwhelmed the area, yet there are no toilets. Conditions are unhygienic and hazardous. Human waste is scattered in the nearby bushes. This is catastrophic, and people's lives remain at constant risk."

The fall of Uvira marks a significant gain for M23 rebels and has triggered fears of renewed violence spreading further south along Lake Tanganyika.

Sporadic gunfire echoed on Uvira's outskirts Thursday morning as families continued to stream across the border.

Aid agencies warn of a growing humanitarian emergency as shelters overflow and food supplies run thin.

Richard Uwimana, coordinator of Burundi's National Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (ONPRA), said the scale of the crisis was overwhelming existing resources.

Uwimana said authorities had registered 20,001 people so far but warned that many refugees had not yet been counted.
